Raw Edges: Studies and Stories of These Days is a collection of thirteen short stories by the English writer and journalist Perceval Landon (29 March 1869 – 23 January 1927). Following its original 1908 publication by William Heinemann Ltd., Raw Edges was not reprinted for 116 years; as such, copies were (until now) incredibly rare: in late 2023, a copy in good condition was able to command a price of just under £2000. It is thus with great pleasure that Glowbug Publishing brings these stories back to life with the publication of this 2024 edition of Raw Edges!

Today, Raw Edges is best remembered for the ghost story Thurnley Abbey, which has been reprinted in many anthologies over the last century. Raw Edges also contains two other ghost stories, Mrs. Rivers’s Journal and Railhead; although the other stories are substantially more corporeal in nature, all of the tales are strongly infused with the macabre, being variously described as ‘grim and terrifying,’ ‘having a ‘taste for the bizarre,’ and as ‘chiefly ghostly or gruesome.’ These include The Gyroscope, an early science fiction horror story that is both truly inventive and horrific, a nightmare that surpasses even Thurnley Abbey in its ability to unsettle. In its horrifying climax, the machine runs amuck in a crowded auditorium, recalling such tragic accidents as the Victoria Hall disaster of 1883 and the Iroquois Theatre fire of 1903.

This new version includes complete and unabridged versions of the stories Railhead, Overtried, A Deathbed Comedy, Thurnley Abbey, The Crusader's Mass, An Outpost of the Empire, "And Our Ignorance in Asking", The Recording Angel's Peerage, Mrs. Rivers's Journal, Skin for Skin, Between Thee and Him Alone, Lady Beatrice, and The Gyroscope, as well as Alberto Martini's original artwork in all its grisly glory, biographies of both Landon and Martini, a new essay on Raw Edges by D. Edward Wright, several appendices (including contemporary reviews of Raw Edges and articles related to Landon), and a comprehensive notes section.
